Mouth guards have a lot of benefits. If you struggle with mouth pain, it can be the one device that brings you some relief. Mouth guards are great for specific types of pain.

If you struggle with pain from a TMJ disorder, bruxism, or sleep apnea, then you may want to speak with your dentist about getting a customized mouth guard. Having even one thing that brings you relief can be a huge help.

How Mouth Guards Help to Reduce Pain

When people suffer from TMJ problems, bruxism, or sleep apnea, they often have a jaw that isn't aligned properly during at least part of their night. By wearing a customized mouth guard, you can keep your jaw aligned properly.

This can bring about mornings that don't have pain, plus it can help decrease pain on the nights where you don't wear your mouth guard for whatever reason.

Mouth guards also keep your jaws apart. This means that you aren't able to push your teeth together because something is in the way. This can decrease pain in your teeth from clenching them down together, and it can decrease pain in your jaw. Both of these happen when your teeth get pushed together roughly during the course of the night.

If you aren't quite sure what a mouth guard could do for you, ask your dentist. During an exam, they can look and see if your teeth show any signs of these problems. If they do, they can show you what a mouth guard would be able to provide you.

From there, you can talk with your dentist about what types of mouth guards are available for your situation. Then, you can get fitted for the custom mouth guard and have your dentist order it from their lab.
