Is a Bridge the Best Restorative Option for One Missing Tooth?
Posted on 7/10/2018 by Kooning Family Dentistry
When you have a missing tooth, you have a couple of options available to you. One is a tooth-supported bridge and the other is a dental implant. As you look at both options you'll see why an implant is a better option.
Bridges are used to restore a gap that occurs when you have several missing teeth in a row. These can be removable or fixed, but they always restore your smile's aesthetics and your mouth's function.
They do require support from your adjacent healthy teeth, though, since this is how we'll be able to securely fix them in your mouth. You should know that we'll need to grind these other teeth down before we can fix your bridge on top of them.
When you're only missing a tooth you are better off with dental implants. They provide a permanent replacement option that can last for a lifetime if you take care of them properly. With dental implants you'll regain your mouth's natural functioning.
We'll permanently anchor your dental implant into your mouth where you'll find that it feels more comfortable than a removable prosthesis. While in place it can also stimulate your jaw and prevent bone loss.
This process involves three parts: a screw, abutment, and custom-made crown – all working together to provide you a sturdy, new tooth. The screw gradually fuses with your jaw as it heals and your crown is made to seamlessly fit in your mouth and look like your other teeth.
