Your Oral Health Improves When You Eat Lots of Vegetables

Posted on 12/10/2018 by Kooning Family Dentistry
Your Oral Health Improves When You Eat Lots of VegetablesDelicious, nutritious, and healthful. Vegetables are an important part of any balanced diet, but did you know that they are also great for keeping your mouth in excellent shape?

The Fight Against Cancer

Leading off the list, vegetables have been linked to oral cancers – particularly, statistics show that the lack of vegetables in one's diet increases their risk. While quitting smoking and other tobacco products remains the most vital step to reduce those risks, it doesn't hurt to throw in a few leafy greens to bolster your chances.

Nature's Toothbrush

It is important to brush twice a day, but when you are snacking and don't have a toothbrush handy, reach for the vegetable tray. Crisp vegetables, like raw carrots and celery, help clean your teeth and abrade away plaque buildup, allowing you to feel less guilt about midday munching. As a bonus, finish off the meal with a little mint, ginger, or parsley to naturally rinse, leading to a cleaner mouth and fresh, tingly breath.

Vitamins Vital for Your Grin

If a healthier, cleaner mouth with a reduced risk of oral cancer wasn't enough, you can also reduce your risks of acid reflux. Less acid in your mouth is a good thing! Furthermore, most green vegetables contain important vitamins (B, C, and K) and minerals (such as potassium, calcium, and iron) that help reduce the risk of and even fight back against gum disease, persistent halitosis, and cavities.

Vegetables are great for your smile, but that's not the only way to keep your mouth fresh and healthy. Please contact us today to learn more great tips and advice on natural remedies to common tooth-born illnesses and preventable problems that might arise due to your diet and learn what you can improve to keep your best tooth forward.
