Dental Implant Placement
Dental implant placement is a surgical procedure that can restore a patient’s smile permanently. Other tooth replacement options like dentures that would normally come out, slide around and often do not have a firm grip in the mouth; dental implant placement can ensure that the patient never has to remove their teeth. Dental implants offer a permanent way to replace missing or damaged teeth, either one at a time, or using full arch restorations, to give you back the use of as many teeth as you like.
What to Expect From Dental Implant PlacementWhen having a dental implant placed in the mouth, it is important to understand what to expect.
Titanium posts are inserted into the jaw bone. An abutment is then screwed onto the ends of the titanium post that is placed into the mouth. Finally, a crown that is made to look and act exactly as a natural tooth is placed over the abutment. This gives the appearance of a normal, permanent tooth that is fixed entirely into the gum. Unlike dentures and partials, dental implants cannot be removed and act just like normal teeth would. Dentures and partials have to be inserted daily, and taken out to be washed or replaced.
During the procedure, local anesthetic is used, as well as any sedation that the patient would prefer. An incision is made in the gum line and the titanium post is then inserted into the jaw and is finished using sutures.
We provide a one step procedure that ensures minimal discomfort, reduces the amount of office visits, as well as the amount of healing time needed for your implants. Unlike dentures, one single tooth can be removed and replaced using a dental implant that matches the aesthetic of your teeth perfectly.
After Care for Dental Implant PlacementCare of the tooth once leaving our office only requires treatment with pain medication, antibiotics, regular cleaning, and occasional ice on the area. This will help the implant sit comfortably as it heals, while also ensuring that infections are reduced. It is important to stay away from eating hard or sticky foods during this time. Once the healing period is over, you are then able to resume normal eating and drinking habits.
The risks involved with this procedure are minimal, making it a safe and effective way to replace the teeth that are missing in the mouth. However, in certain rare cases, infection and pain in the area can be an issue. Expulsion of the implant is also possible, though very unlikely. Dr. Chris Kooning takes special precautions to prevent these occurrences from happening, and ensures that your smile will be back to its former self in no time.
